“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” — Lois Lowry, The Giver
This quote has been on my mind this afternoon. We all have memories that we hold close—some joyful, some that still ache. We think the pain is the heaviest part, the thing we have to carry.
But Lowry reminds us that the true burden is carrying them alone. A memory, good or bad, is an echo in an empty room until it’s shared.
Sharing joy multiplies it. Sharing sorrow divides the weight. It’s the act of sharing that transforms a memory from a private burden into a shared human experience. It’s what reminds us we’re not the only ones who have felt this way.
